The Telegraph - 29 August 2002
Nelson Mandela has hardly been twiddling his thumbs since stepping down as
president of South Africa - but he has found time to take up at least one new
hobby.
Mandela, now aged 84, began drawing two years ago and next month will hold the
first exhibition' of his own artwork.
The show, at the Belgravia Gallery in London, will feature lithographs of line
drawings, which will be sold to raise money for the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
The works are described as "iconic representations" of Mandela's life,
and divide into two sets: a series of drawings of hands (said to symbolise the
struggle for freedom in his native land), and sketches of Robben Island, where
he spent most of his 27 years in prison.
