Press Reviews: Mandela's art bears the scars

The Telegraph - July 2004

Now that he is the world's favourite elder statesman, it is easy to forget that Nelson Mandela spent much of his adult life behind bars.

But for the former South African president himself, the memories are still painfully clear, as is evidenced by his latest piece of art, Bars and Key.

"The work is a limited edition lithograph which features the bars on his cell, painted with his fingers, and a replica of the key," says Richard Fitzwilliams, of the Belgravia Gallery, where the work is being exhibited.

"Since Mandela produced his first work of art a few years ago, the prices his pieces reach have risen enormously, which is fantastic, because the money raised from sales goes to his Aids charity."
