Damien HIrst, born in Bristol in 1965, is now one of Britain's most prolific contemporary artists. He studied fine art at Goldsmith's College and, whilst still a student, established himself in the art world through exhibitons like the Freeze
Exhibition, 1988. It was by way of this event that the Young British Artists movement started and it was here that Charles Saatchi saw and admired Hirst's art. He soon became his primary patron.
Hirst is best known for his
controversial
subject
matter
and his ability to shock with works such as
his animals preserved in formaldehyde. One of these pieces, 'Mother and Child', earned him the Turner Prize in 1995.
