Simpson was born in Camberley in Surrey and wanted to pursue a career in the army but an unfortunate riding accident prevented it. He went to Paris to the renowned Academie Julian and studied art. His talents were immediately recognised and he was
exhibited at the Paris Salon. In 1915 he won a gold medal at the Panama International Exposition in San Fransisco. In 1914 he was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in watercolours. He married Ruth Alison, a noted portrait painter and they
moved to St Ives in Cornwall. In 1921 he was elected to the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Belgravia Gallery has a wonderful oil 'The Water Meadows at Guildford' available. This particular painting combines Simpson's strengths and presents an
essential English scene with the speed and sensitivity of the French impressionists who were his original inspiration. His works are to be found in The Laing Art Gallery and Museums in Bournemouth, Doncaster, Derby and Paris and in America. For
